Recognized for fostering collaboration and delivering a project that strengthens regional transit and community connections.

The SMART Petaluma North Station project has been recognized with the John L. Martin Partnered Project of the Year Award, which honors teams that implement International Partnering Institute (IPI) best practices and foster collaborative, high-trust relationships in complex infrastructure delivery.
Led in construction by Stacy Witbeck and Ghilotti Brothers, A Joint Venture, the project delivered a new infill station along the SMART Commuter Rail line that enhances connectivity, supports sustainable transportation, and improves access for residents throughout northern Petaluma.
“This project was a true team effort, and we’re thankful for everyone who contributed to its success. Being recognized with this award reminds us of the value of working together and learning from one another.”
—Dan Elshire, Northern California Regional Manager
The station strengthens connectivity into the heart of Petaluma, offering residents and visitors in the renowned wine region a convenient transportation option. Nearby residents now also have a direct public transit connection to San Francisco. The project included six miles of pedestrian pathways adjacent to the track, improving non-motorized access throughout the area.

Key elements of the project included the replacement of 650 track feet and a 420-track feet grade crossing, the construction of two pedestrian bridges, a new station platform, and upgrades to drainage and traffic signals.
“This recognition reflects the team’s commitment to collaboration and excellence. Every step of the SMART Petaluma North Station project was guided by a focus on trust, teamwork, and delivering the best possible outcome for the community.”
—Nick Slama, Project Manager
