This Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) project extends the Kansas City Streetcar alignment south from Union Station to the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) campus. Building on the original Main Street line completed in 2016, this new 3.5-mile extension improves transit access, supports economic development along the corridor, and accommodates an expanded streetcar fleet.
Scope of Work
The project delivers complex streetcar infrastructure while integrating operational and maintenance improvements seamlessly into the existing transit system.
The extension includes seven miles of track, consisting of 3.5 miles of double-track curbside running, two single crossovers, and one double crossover. The project features 15 new station stops, roadway and trackway drainage, electrical and communications duct bank and cabling, five TPSS buildings and sitework, overhead catenary system (OCS) foundations, street lighting, landscaping, sidewalk and roadway replacement, traffic signage and striping, and a curb-to-curb asphalt profile mill and overlay.
The project also expands the existing Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF) to support additional vehicles. Work includes constructing a 3,500 square foot annex and storage building, remodeling the existing 6,000 square foot annex building, adding an additional storage bay with three new turnouts, and constructing tracks 4 through 6. Existing 36-inch sewer lines and TPSS primary power feeds that conflicted with the expansion were relocated. A SCADA terminal was installed to support the rollout of SCADA for the Starter Line and Main Street Extension.
The expansion also includes installation of five additional switches, including a single crossover, approximately 1,500 track feet of 115RE rail, additional switch heaters, and all necessary overhead components.
Impact
As one of Kansas City’s largest transportation initiatives, this project improves mobility, safety, and economic opportunities, enhances transit connectivity to UMKC and nearby neighborhoods, and increases system capacity with a modernized vehicle maintenance facility.
