Bluffdale City 14600 S Railroad Crossing

Stacy Witbeck is delivering a landmark road widening and underpass project that expands a single-lane road to four lanes beneath an active Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and Utah Transit Authority (UTA) corridor.  

Need 

To better accommodate the growing traffic demands in the surrounding areas, the City decided to invest in an expansion of the existing single-lane road into a more accessible four-lane system.  

Work 

• Expansion of a single-lane roadway to four lanes 
• Construction of a new concrete drainage for an adjacent irrigation canal 
• Construction of a new box undercrossing using a European horizontal precast box jacking method 

Impact  

The delivery of a four-lane underpass where a single-lane road once created a critical bottleneck, unlocking improved traffic flow and long-term capacity for the corridor. Completing the drainage structure ahead of schedule eliminated dependency on a future irrigation shutdown window, keeping the project on track and reducing risk to the surrounding community. 

Innovations   

• Addition of a horizontal precast box jacking technique to allow smooth operations for UPRR and UTA existing rail.  
• Sequencing the canal drainage structure as a standalone first phase to protect construction windows and avoid schedule conflicts.
