This was a $25 million project to reconstruct the historic Pike’s Peak Cog Railway. The cog railway is the highest railway in the nation and one of only two cog railways in the United States. The work included removing and replacing 9.5 miles of track, 13 turnouts, three passing sidings, the summit platform, and 149 rail anchors to secure the track to the mountain.
Work also included rehabilitating three bridges and constructing one new bridge. The railway commissioned the retrofitted DMUs and the new snowplow in November 2021. Access to the project was limited, and the alignment was in a constrained right-of-way with steep grades up to 25 percent. The elevation gain was more than 5,500 ft, with the elevation topping out at 14,115 ft.
